I manage a small fleet and I am trying to sort our trucks by gear ratio without crawling under each one. Can I get the axle ratio out of the VIN directly, or does that require the full build record? Some of these are 2018 Silverados and some are older.

Not from the VIN itself. The ratio lives in the build record as a G-prefix code. GU6 and GT4 are the common ones on those trucks and they map to specific ratios.

For a fleet, pulling each build sheet by VIN once and recording the axle code in your spreadsheet is the fastest path. After that you never have to look again.

That is what I will do. Cheaper than putting every truck on a lift to read the tag.
