Chevrolet Equipment Examples by Category

A Chevrolet build record lists factory equipment as RPO codes, and those codes fall into recognizable groups: powertrain, chassis, trailering, exterior, and interior. Knowing the groups makes a long code list much easier to scan when you look up your VIN.

Engines

Engine codes identify the engine family and displacement the vehicle was built with, which matters more than a fender badge when you're judging a used Chevy. On the Silverado 1500 generation that began in 2014, for example, L83 is the 5.3L V8 and L86 the 6.2L V8. LS3, another 6.2L V8, belongs to an earlier engine family used in some Corvette and Camaro SS models.

CodeEngine
LS36.2L V8
L866.2L V8 EcoTec3
L835.3L V8 EcoTec3
LFX3.6L V6

Chevy Engine Code by VIN covers where to find the engine code for a specific vehicle.

Suspension, off-road & emissions

Suspension codes record ride tuning and off-road hardware, such as the Z71 package on Chevrolet trucks and SUVs. They are the codes to check when a listing calls a truck "off-road equipped," because a decal can be added later but the factory code can't. Emissions calibration codes record the emissions standard the vehicle was built to.

CodeEquipment
Z71Off-Road Suspension Package
Z85Standard / heavy-duty suspension
FE9Federal emissions calibration

Axles, differentials & trailering

These codes describe how power reaches the wheels and what towing hardware was installed. G80 is the automatic locking rear differential, NHT the Max Trailering Package on the Silverado, and Z82 a trailering package. Axle ratio codes such as GU6 (3.42), GT4 (3.73) and GT5 (4.10) belong to this group on many GM trucks, and an integrated trailer brake controller shows up as JL1. Meanings vary by model and year.

CodeEquipment
G80Locking / limited-slip rear differential
NHTMax Trailering Package
Z82Trailering equipment

Installed equipment is not the same thing as a tow rating. The published rating depends on the full configuration and that model year's specifications, which Chevy Towing Package by VIN covers in more detail.

Paint, wheels & exterior

Exterior codes record the factory paint color, wheels, tires, mirrors, lighting, and similar equipment. In the RPO code navigator, for instance, ZII is listed as "Primary exterior color: Cherry Red Metallic" and HJ7 as "Wheels: 18.0 X 8.0 Aluminum, Painted, Unflanged." The same color name can carry different codes across model lines and years, so match the code in your vehicle's own record rather than the color name.

Interior, audio & technology

Inside the cabin, codes record the seats, climate controls, sound system, and convenience features. On a used vehicle they help you check claims about premium audio, power seats, or other features that differ between trim levels.

CodeEquipment
UQABose premium audio system
AG1Power driver-seat adjuster
C49Rear-window defogger
AU3Power door locks

These are common examples for illustration only. Code meanings vary by model, model year, and GM brand, and not every build record includes every category. To check your own vehicle, look up its VIN: the lookup shows the original window sticker PDF when one is available, and otherwise the RPO build list when that record exists. RPO codes explained covers what the codes are and where they are printed on a vehicle.
