Looking at a 2019 Silverado listed as a Z71. The badges are there and the seller swears it is factory. I have the VIN from the listing. Will the VIN itself tell me whether Z71 was actually ordered, or do I need something else? I have been burned before by badges that came out of a parts catalog.

The seventeen characters alone will not tell you. VIN structure covers things like model, engine family, plant and year, not individual option packages.

What you want is the build record for that VIN. Z71 shows up as its own line if the truck was actually built with it. Badges prove nothing, they are twenty dollars online.

Ran it and Z71 is listed. Seller was honest. Appreciate the sanity check before I drove three hours.
