Does the VIN itself confirm whether a Camaro is a real SS, or is that another thing that only lives in the build record? There are a lot of clones out there and I do not want to overpay for badges and a body kit.

The VIN carries the engine family, which on an SS narrows it considerably, but it does not confirm the trim outright.

The engine character is a strong signal though. If the car is badged SS and the VIN says a smaller engine family, you have your answer immediately without any further research.

That is a useful first filter. Then the build record for the rest.

That is the sequence I use. VIN to eliminate the obvious fakes, build record to confirm the real ones.
