I am shopping used Silverados and want a short list of codes worth checking on every truck I look at. I do not want to become an expert, I just want to know the handful that actually change what the truck is worth or what it can do.

Trailering group, axle ratio, and the off-road suspension package if you care about that. Those three change capability and price more than anything else.

Add the engine code. On these trucks the engine is the single biggest value driver and it is the thing sellers are vaguest about.

And the axle ratio. Two identical looking trucks with different gears tow very differently, and buyers almost never check it.

Four codes then. Engine, axle, trailering, suspension. That is a manageable checklist.

That covers most of it. Everything else is comfort content that shows in the photos anyway.
