I inherited a 1972 C10 and the VIN is only thirteen characters. Every decoder I try rejects it for being too short. Was there a different system back then, and is there anywhere that handles these older numbers?

Correct, the seventeen character standard did not arrive until 1981. Before that manufacturers used their own formats and the lengths varied between them.

On a 1972 the number encodes things like series, body, engine, model year and assembly plant, but in a Chevrolet-specific layout that modern decoders do not implement.

That explains every error message I have gotten. Is there a better document to work from on a truck this old?

The cowl tag. On a truck of that era it carries paint and body information the VIN does not, and it is more useful for a restoration than the number itself.

Second the cowl tag. For a 72 C10 that plus any original paperwork is what buyers want to see anyway.
