What do the engine and transmission VIN characters mean?

I understand the VIN has a character for the engine but I keep reading that it does not tell you the transmission. Which positions actually carry the powertrain information, and why does the transmission not get its own character?

The eighth character generally identifies the engine family. There is no dedicated transmission character in the standard seventeen character layout.

It is a space problem. Seventeen characters have to cover manufacturer, vehicle attributes, a check digit, year, plant and a serial number. Transmission did not make the cut.

So the engine is in the VIN and the transmission is only in the build record. That clears up why the free decoders never show it.

Correct, and even the engine character gives you a family rather than a specific variant in some years.
