My Chevrolet VIN keeps coming back as invalid on every site I try. I have checked it against the registration three times and it matches. Seventeen characters, no spaces. What would make a valid VIN read as invalid?

The usual suspects are the letters I, O and Q. Those are not used in VINs, so if you have read a 1 as an I or a 0 as an O, every validator will reject it.

There is also a check digit in position nine that is calculated from the other characters. One wrong character anywhere makes the check digit fail, even if the length is right.

It was an O that should have been a zero, on the registration itself. The state wrote it wrong. Now I have a different problem but at least the decoder works.

That happens more than you would think. Worth getting the registration corrected before you sell it.
