Someone told me you can tell which plant built a vehicle from the VIN. Is that true for Chevrolet, and does it actually matter for anything practical or is it just trivia?

It is true. One of the characters identifies the assembly plant, and it is consistent enough to be reliable.

Whether it matters depends. For most owners it is trivia. For recalls and some service bulletins it matters a great deal, because those are often scoped to a plant and a date range.

That is a better reason to care than I expected. Is the build date in there too?

Not in the VIN as a date, but the build record and the door label carry it. Between the two you can place the vehicle precisely.
