L83 — Engine identification code. This code identifies the factory-installed engine family. Browse RPO codes →

The build sheet for my 2014 lists one engine code but the engine in the truck has different casting marks than I expected. I am the third owner so anything could have happened. Before I panic, how common is it for the record to be wrong versus the engine actually having been swapped at some point?

The factory record is almost never wrong about what was installed on the line. It is a record of the build, and it does not update afterward.

So the record is right about 2014 and the truck is telling you about today. An engine replacement, even a warranty long block, will not change the build sheet.

Check the engine stamp against the VIN derivative if you can find it. On a replacement engine it will not match, and that tells you what happened without guessing.

Makes sense. So the sheet is history, not a current inspection. I will get the stamp checked.
