RPO — Factory equipment record identifying installed options. Browse RPO codes →

There are a dozen free Chevrolet VIN decoders online and they give me slightly different answers for the same VIN. One says one trim and another says something else. How much should I trust any of them, and is there a way to know which is right?

Most free decoders read the VIN structure only, which gives you model line, engine family, plant and year. Anything past that is a guess based on averages.

That is why they disagree on trim. Trim is not encoded in the seventeen characters in a way that survives across model years.

If you want the real answer, pull the factory build record for that specific VIN. That is the one document that is not inferring anything.

So the free decoders are guessing at exactly the part I cared about. Good to know before I made a decision on that.
